This is my 15th year of running a data recovery operation.

30 years ago I was migrating data for government contractors, electricity boards and developing software for competitive tendering to improve DLOs whilst building a small company.

I had some success and some failures.

Decisions influenced by a recession, banking crisis & health issues complicated by an undiagnosed brain tumour.

Ultimately it nearly ended in a disaster when I had an epileptic fit behind the wheel of a sports car.

Luckily the family crossing in front of me never knew what could have happened if my foot had hit the accelerator and launched 225hp through an automatic gearbox to a new set of Pirreli PZeros.

Looking back all the pointers to a disaster were there: Regular glitches, asking questions of professionals but getting the wrong advice or the wrong solution.

Along with many other of life's challenges it culminated in disaster - a crashed marriage, debt and imminent operations, more than a decade of experiments with medications.

The parallels of business life are the same for most of our clients.

Running a data recovery lab is stressful, the data disaster the last straw in a catalogue of life's other distractions is a great responsibility.

Reputation, Trust and Data

There are many cases where the recovery of data can be placed in the wrong hands here is one…

The situation was more or less as described in terms of the physical discs but the logical issues with deleting VMs further complicated by the recovery finding much more data than expected.

A video sent to the client showing file names revealed we were also finding data from virtual servers from a few years ago of a company are not aware their cloud based Virtual Server was left on s server that has been reused by another un associated company.

Data Centres, Hosting and IT Department understand the importance of GDPR but like me they use endpoint encryption and secure destruction as part of the data protection process.

The solution for many I believe will be tokenisation.

One possibility is Zortrex.

Tokenisation is the fundamental building block of data protection.

How many companies who have hosted servers or Virtual machines do not know someone else could be accessing their data days months or even years after the hardware has been decommissioned and sold on.

The cloud is just somewhere else to lose access to data (The Register: Google Drive Falters).
