What Does It Mean When Data Is Corrupted?

To put it simply, it is when files are damaged (beyond repair more often than not). When files are corrupt, it means that they cannot be opened, although sometimes the files can be repaired.

How Do You Fix Corrupted Data?

If a word document is corrupted and cannot be opened then depending on the extent of the damage they are fixable. In this case when you open the word document, it will ask if you want word to repair the file, if you click "yes" and the file opens then save the data as a new document. If it doesn’t work and you are still unable to open the document then you can try and see if the document opens in Open office writer rather than Microsoft word.

There are a few options you can try with trying to recover corrupted documents, although a lot of the time the files are damaged beyond repair.

How Does A File Become Corrupt?

There are a few reasons as to why data can be corrupt. For example, if we try and recover a folder full of pictures that have been deleted, then it’s possible that not all of the pictures will be in fully working order.

Another reason is if the hard drive has accumulated a fair few bad sectors. If this happens then it’s possible that data areas may be affected which will affect certain files, so it is a good idea to back up your data onto another drive or the cloud.

There may be an issue with accessing the files if you have been affected by Ransomware, even though this doesn’t corrupt your files it will overwrite every single file you have if you don’t take extreme action, meaning you won’t be able to open your files and the contents of the files will be scattered around the drive. If this is the case then the only course of action would be to scan the drive for RAW data (numbered files), then once we recover the numbered files then you would have to go through the files and find which file is which and also rename them (since the structure of the files will be lost).

This maybe slightly tedious but it would be the only way to restore any ounce of structure to the files.

How Can I Repair Corrupt mp4 Files?

If you have a corrupt mp4 file, using third party repair software may work, it depends on how corrupt the mp4 file is. Here at R3 if we come across a corrupt mp4 file a customer is wanting we use VLC Media Player. This particular software offers corruption repair on mp4 files and many more video files. Nine times out of ten the software is able to repair the file, however for the severely corrupt mp4 files there is no way that we know of to repair them.
